Mind at Work

Understanding Emotional Challenges at Work

Eight weekly evening seminars/workshops

starting on Tuesday 17 May 2011

from 6:45pm to 9:15pm

at the Lincoln Centre in Clapham, South London

We are all familiar with work situations that in spite of all our skills and experience can at times leave us feeling:

IrritatedUnable to think straight
StressedGoing round in circles
InadequateOverwhelmed
GuiltyIll-equipped

These eight seminars/workshops offer you a basic introduction to psychoanalytic ways of thinking about the hidden dynamics between people in situations in everyday working life. The purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of human relationships to help you deal better with problems and conflicts in the workplace.

Whilst this short course will have an immediate relevance for people working in health, education and social care settings, it is designed for anyone in the workplace.

Certificates of attendance will be provided at the end of the course for CPD purposes. The course may also lead to participation in ongoing work discussion groups.

Feedback from previous participants

"... it has given me a lot to think about and I am sure will be of creative benefit to my work with organizations and children's homes ... the opportunity to have a 'third space' to reflect on difficult work situations and how psychodynamic theory applies to work settings ... As my post involves planning and managing projects in relation to children in public care, I have found the course useful in thinking through why barriers to change exist."

"... Whilst undertaking the course I felt my capacity to listen to my staff and understand where they might be coming from increased. I think this is because I 'felt' the added support of the group and I had the knowledge that I was learning things that might help me to cope better - this made me feel more on top of things ..."

"... I had the best supervision in a year with one of my managers the week after finishing the Mind at Work Course. I felt more able to think whilst we were talking, really hear what she was saying, and then make some good suggestions ..."

"[Since completing this course], I am always trying not to 'react' in difficult exchanges and to difficult emails etc. I try to think more about what I need to do, what is the right thing to do. After completing this course I am a lot more likely to say I will get back to people and that I need to think about things."

"... there has been noticeable change and positive influence in my personal and work environment as a result of this course."

Course fee: £198

Work in Mind

Open to people who have completed the Mind at Work course

This is a follow-on module to the Mind At Work course and as such it aims to deepen awareness and understanding of the key issues covered in the first module whilst also introducing new thinking about those experiences we have at work that often leave us feeling perplexed, angry, disillusioned and occasionally overwhelmed.

This Work in Mind module will provide the opportunity for a stimulating examination of how psychoanalytic thinking can help us with such experiences in the workplace.

It will look at why we often "take work home with us", how it is difficult for ourselves or our colleagues to "drop" issues that may be causing upset. Why there is any need to struggle with thinking, and how and why some ideas/solutions will require considerable working through in our minds before any resolution occurs.

The module will also take a broader look at the work place; the importance of leadership and follower-ship, how and why a push towards more autocratic systems occurs, and at why change is so frequently experienced as a threat and not as a creative process.

In covering these aspects, the module will also consider the role of decision-making and how these processes can become a source of worry. "Doing the right thing" in a risk-averse organisation may give rise to stress which, if not recognised and owned, can become chronic over time.

Looking at these competing tensions, ideas will be explored in relation to differences and sameness, innovation and the requirement of following protocol, the need to make individual judgments against a backdrop of organisational procedures and expectation. In this way, building on the Mind at Work course, this module continues to help us make sense of the way we work.

Introductory Discussions:

Using Psychoanalytic Ideas in One-to-One Work

This ongoing discussion group is designed for people in the helping professions such as counsellors, psychologists, social workers, GPs, psychiatrists and nurses who wish to deepen their work in one to one relationships with clients / students / patients / supervisees.

The small group discussions take place over six Monday evenings per term. They are facilitated by experienced Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists and held in accessible venues around London. The group will provide a space to bring problematic situations with clients / patients / supervisees and will offer an opportunity to think creatively about the difficulties encountered.

Participants may subsequently consider applying to a Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
