Modified Entry Scheme (MES)

The aim of this scheme is to help Adult Psychotherapists outside the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and qualified Child Psychotherapists to achieve a level of practice and training appropriate for BPC registration. Successful completion of the course leads to registration with the BPC.

  • The scheme is flexible and will be individually designed for each participant.
  • Applications from those living outside London are especially welcome and a telephone audio link can be provided for the evening seminars.
  • We welcome informal enquiries and would be pleased to speak with you by phone before you make your application.

Requirements

All applicants will need to have had 2 years clinical experience since qualification.

It is expected that applicants will have undergone an intensive training psychotherapy equivalent to that required for the Lincoln's Qualifying Course. If not, further treatment would be a requirement.

The Course

The MES is a programme of advanced seminars (10 per term) led by experienced teachers. They are all senior BPC-registered practitioners who are usually either Psychoanalysts or Lincoln Members who hold the Advanced Lincoln Psychotherapist (ALP) qualification.

MES participants join a variety of seminars within the Qualifying Course, and, on occasion, specific MES seminars.

A balance of theoretical orientations will be aimed for, offering different theoretical and technical approaches.

The seminars are held at different venues around London on Thursday evenings, combined with some Saturday workshops. Some seminars are held at the Lincoln Centre's premises in Clapham (South-West London). Each seminar runs for one and a half hours.

Additional seminars will be offered where necessary and take place within the context of the Lincoln Qualifying Course: e.g. Theory, Infant Observation, Setting up in Private practice, Use of Couch with Adult Patients.

Attendance at weekly clinical seminars will normally be required until the completion of the clinical requirements of the course.

Adult psychotherapists who have not attended Infant Observation Seminars will have to complete a year's observation of a baby and write a paper on their experience.

Clinical Work

Participants are required to treat 2 intensive (3 times weekly) cases, one for at least 2 years and another for 18 months. Weekly supervision is required for each case.

Personal Tutor

Each participant is allocated a personal tutor for the duration of the Scheme.

Application

Further details of the course and fees may be obtained from the Training Administrator at the Lincoln office. Before applying, prospective applicants are invited to request a preliminary informal discussion with the Director of Training, Ms Mary Eckert.

Applications are considered throughout the year as the Scheme is flexible and can start at the beginning of each term.
